Around the years 1238-1408, Thailand capital was located at Sukhothai. During that time, Sukothai often fought with its neighbour. Skill such as kicking, kneeing, punching and elbowing were developed. So, MuayThai was created. Muay Thai was a higher art and was a part of royal curriculum. According to some resource, this era is Sukothai era. From era to era, MuayThai is used as self-defense and teached in military. On King Narai Era (1604 - 1690), MuayThai became a profesional sport. Even on King Prachao Sua Era (1697 - 1709), King himself gone for fight on the arena and win after 3 good fighters, they were Nai Klan Madtai (killing fist), Nai Yai Madlek (iron fist), and Nai Lek Madnak (hard fist). Pre-Fight Ritual When entering the ring, fighter use Mongkon on their head and Pong Malai around their necks. Mongkon is represent the gym, it is essentially a crown. Hak Kor Erawan

Use both hands to hold around the opponent's neck, bend the Opponents head down to the front then bend both legs to in order to bend the knees to the opponent chin or chest.

To protect
Put both elbows close together to the front then try to strike the elbows to the opponent's thighs strongly.

To counter
Insert the arm in circle and hold the head up, then counter by kneeing or pushing the crossed knee to the abdomen. Another trick is pushing the hand to the opponent's chin and thrusting a power full hand at the same time as the opponent throws the knee. The opponent may be fall back down.
